7 ways drinking tequila can actually be good for you
This is only the best news ever.
Look, tequila will probably never be classified as a ‘health food,’ it does have some surprising health benefits.
As you sip that margarita, sit back and check out some the reasons we love this drink even more...
1. It’s good for your gut
Tequila regulates the absorption of fat in your intestines, and will feed the beneficial bacteria living in your intestines. Basically, if you want to have a healthy digestive tract, a shot or two of tequila can go a long way.
It is worth noting though that getting drunk will most likely do the exact opposite and wipe out your natural reserves of healthy bacteria as your immune system is forced to work overtime on the toxins inherent in any alcohol.
2. It may be diabetes-friendly
Many alcohols negatively impact those with diabetes, as the sugar in alcohol tends to raise blood sugar levels. However, some doctors believe that tequila is better for diabetics than most alcohols. There is far less sugar in tequila than in many other liquors (rum and brandy, among others), so it will have less of an impact on blood sugar.
3. It can fight cholesterol
Tequila helps your body to break down the fat in the food you eat, making it easier for the fat to be absorbed. However, the fat break-down process makes it easier for your body to process and eliminate, and will reduce your overall levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
4. It’s good for your bones
When you drink tequila, you make it easier for your body to absorb calcium - the mineral that keeps your bones healthy and strong.
5. It can deal with pain
Drinking tequila has long been the Mexican remedy for aches and pains, and studies have proven that it can be an effective pain reliever. Not only does it help to dilate the blood vessels (leading to better blood flow), but it can help you to deal with tension, strains, and even mild headaches. We’re betting this is one of the less surprising health benefits of tequila to you.
6. It can be used to cure a cold
Back in the 1930s, doctors in Mexico used to promote this tequila concoction (sounds like a Margarita?) to fight off the common cold: Tequila, agave nectar and fresh lime juice.
And of course, the best one of all...
7. It doesn’t give you a hangover
That is if you drink the high shelf stuff. Again, you have to drink ‘100% agave’ tequila to get this benefit. Cheaper brands will be filled out with other sugar alcohols, which will knock you out.
Granted, we take all of the above with a grain of salt - and a slice of lime - because it really does depend how MANY shots of tequila you are downing to cure what ails you.
